I’m a firm believer that your drinks should be as fun to make as they are to drink. This is no exception. As I dive deeper into the history of classic cocktails, I’ve found myself wondering how coffee could be featured in place of a spirit. This is a simple riff on an Old Fashioned, a traditional cocktail that usually features whiskey. Instead, I’ve replaced it with iced coffee and topped it with cherrywood smoke, creating a drink that’s refined and oh so much fun to make.
Recipe
- 1 sugar cube
- 2 dashes of orange bitters
- Splash of maraschino cherry juice (adjust to taste but I used about 7g by weight)
- 6oz of iced coffee, preferably something light and floral
- Cherrywood smoke
Directions
Muddle together the sugar cube, bitters, and cherry juice in a mixing glass. Add several large ice cubes, coffee, and then stir vigorously to chill. Strain the drink out into your serving glass, adding a fresh ice cube to serve. Place a smoker atop the glass and fill the top basket with cherry wood. Light the wood chips and allow the smoke to infuse into the drink for 30-45 seconds. Finally, remove the smoker and enjoy immediately.
